"I never fully understood the point of a doula. I always thought the last thing I'd want in labor was another person trying to tell me what to do or to control my experience. Plus, what was the point of a doula if I already had my support team? Obviously, I wasn't very educated on what a doula actually is. This was until the night I went into labor.
Being that I wanted an all natural childbirth, 5 days passed my due date, and completely uneducated on what to expect; my cousin asked me to go over to Micole's house to talk about the process of labor and delivery, and to learn about different positions to help with labor pains. Right off the bat, Micole was EXTREMELY welcoming and sweet. Nothing but positive energy. She immediately wanted to know what I envisioned my birth experience being like. She was very encouraging and open to listening. She educated me on what to expect during labor and also ways in how i could overcome obstacles that I would soon face. She made me feel very comfortable learning different positions. After talking with micole I felt confident with taking on my child birth. So confident that I ended up going into labor at HER HOUSE.
Immediately, Micole dropped everything she was doing and accompanied me to the hospital. While in labor, Micole was a reminder that I COULD have my birth experience the way I wanted to. She was my advocate and showed me not to be afraid to voice exactly what I wanted and did not want to my medical team. She kept me focused on my goals and helped me apply what I learned throughout every contraction. She constantly cheered me on and supported every decision I made. She was so professional, and not once did I fear judgement from her nor did I ever feel like she was controlling my birth experience. Everything I had told her I wanted for my birth experience she did her best and helped make it possible.
Micole went the extra mile and was sweet enough to bring me a birthing ball, prepare an organic smoothie to keep me energized, and even brought along oils that she made to keep me relaxed. Things like this assured me that Micole really cares about her clients. Being a doula is definitely not just a paycheck for her. Her passion for what she does flows abundantly through her. The effort she put into making me comfortable made me feel important and safe.
Lastly, Micole never overstepped her boundaries, never pressured me into doing something I didn't want to do, and never intruded with the experience of my loved ones. It meant a lot to me to see that she influenced everyone in my support team to be a part of the experience and not feel like just another person in the room. Not once did they feel left out or in loss of how to help because micole made it a point to show them that their involvement was significant and important to me. Micole demonstrated to them how to apply pressure to my back to help with the pain of contractions and she also showed them how to physically and emotionally support me throughout my whole labor. Helping make not only my experience but their experiences one to remember.
I would HIGHLY recommend Micole to anyone interested in having a doula as part of their birth experience. I never would have expected to have a doula as part of my own, but I'm so blessed and grateful that I did. Without Micole, I'm not sure how well my birth experience would have went. I would have been afraid, and easily controlled by the doctors and nurses. I'm very glad Micole was a part of my big day."
